The North Hero House is located on the
Lake Champlain Bikeways
Network. We also offer Inn to Inn Guided tours through Vermont Bicycle
Tours and Bike Vermont.
Cyclists who ride in the Champlain Valley know it has all the right
ingredients for a premier bicycle touring destination including quiet
back roads, breathtaking scenery, picturesque villages, lovely
shoreline parks, lake views, world renowned historic sites and
museums, and connections to rail and ferry lines.
Centrally located in the beautiful Champlain Islands, there are
five individual excursions (ranging from 10-15 miles in length) that
are within an easy pedal of The North Hero House. Each loop connects
to the 350 mile Network. Hero’s Welcome, the General Store in the
charming village of North Hero rents bikes and is just a few steps
from our door.
Choose your tour from Liquid Elixir, A Trail of Two Beaches and
Island life to A Legacy of Ancient Stone and Stone Castles, each tour
will take you past some of the islands best.
Liquid Elixir, winds through Alburg Village and on to Mud Creek
Wildlife area which hosts a variety of plant, animal, bird and aquatic
life. Your 11.7mile tour ends back in the Village of Alburg.
A Trail of Two Beaches, a relatively flat figure 8, connects
two state parks and may be shortened by only riding one of the loops.
Great lake views abound as you cycle through Alburg Dunes State Park.
Catch glimpses of the "Inland Sea" enroute, and if you’re
lucky, deer as you reach Coons point. The full loop is 15.8 miles
Island Life, roams the backroads and shores of Grand isle for a
reflection of Island living, past and present. Pedal through an open
field, and past the original one-room schoolhouse and the Hyde Log
Cabin. A highlight along this path is an observation platform atop a
low hill, affording an expansive view over the campground, across the
"Inland Sea" and Mount Mansfield and the Green Mountain
Ridgeline. You’ll return back to the ferry dock after your 11.6 mile
ride.
A Legacy of Ancient Stone, winds through Isle La Motte , one of
the world’s riches sites for the study of geology. Its unique
features include what has been called "the world’s oldest
reef". Begin the loop at
St. Anne’s Shrine, walk the peaceful grounds, picnic or swim at
the beach before continuing along the route. Pass by the remains of
the quarry, a dairy farm and the ILM historical society, and the old
hill house, built entirely of ILM stone. The trip is 10.1 miles.
Stone Castles, pedals you through South Hero, know as the
"Garden Spot of Vermont", having a longer growing season
thanks to the moderating effect of Lake Champlain. Pedal past
miniature castles, built by Harry Barber, a native of Switzerland,
created from Vermont stone between 1920 and 1966. Riding this loop,
you will see examples of his craftsmanship, in creating these
miniature masterpieces. Though the castles reside on private property,
they can be seen from the road.
Five additional tours, set up by the Lake Champlain Chamber of
Commerce, covering similar but slightly different paths are also
popular peddling routes.
