BIRDING IN THE
CHAMPLAIN ISLANDS Did you know that the North Hero House is located just a short distance from the Missisquoi Wildlife Refuge? Nature trails allow visitors to explore this nearly 6,000 acre marsh and woodland along the Missisquoi River. During spring and fall migrations it is like a huge avian convention center. Plan a visit this season. Youll be glad you did. Last spring I witnessed thousands of snow geese in the early morning as they began the next leg of their journey north. I first spotted what I thought was piled up ice and snow on the edge of the ice where it met the open water. Much to my surprise, the snow lifted up and took flight with a great cacaphony of hooting and hollering. It was such a magnificent sight, that as the sun caught the wings of the pure white birds I got goose bumps. Wonderful country these Champlain Islands! There are also several blue heron resident right here in City Bay. Last summer we had a regular visitor on the end of the floating dock early in the morning. If you are an early riser look out for him. Approach slowly though, because they spook easily. Do you like Purple Martins? We have a Martin house at the end of the steamship pier. There are also some nests under the porch along the lake by Cove House. Walk down to the pier, relax in an Adirondack chair and enjoy the birds and the view. Brochures for the Wildlife Refuge are available at the front desk. North Hero House - Copyright 1998 |
