Best Bicycling Routes and Trails in the Lake Champlain Islands

Whether you want an easy few mile bicycle ride or something a little more challenging that will take you a day to ride. Here are a couple of ways you can cycle the Isles.

You will not be disappointed with access to over 1,600 miles of bicycle routes and trails that span both sides of Lake Champlain, across Vermont, New York and even into Canada.  With the sun on your cheeks (we hope, but you know Vermont’s weather…), the breeze in your hair and incredible sights at every turn – you will love it. Whether you have a road bike, mountain bike or an ebike, there is a bike path for you.

For casual bike rides through the Lake Champlain Islands you can start your tour off with a nice hot breakfast and a delicious cup of Vermont Coffee Company’s finest coffee before heading South on Route 2 through the Historic North Hero Village.  Don’t forget to stop at Hero’s Welcome for your favorite picnic lunch! Get your uphill out of the way at the start of your route and take Station Road down to the West Shore of North Hero. Sit for a minute and soak in the West Shore views and that fresh Island air before heading south towards South End Road.  Take a left onto South End and follow it to the end where you’ll continue South on Route 2 to Knight’s Point State Park.  If you return from here, you’ll hit just over 8 miles - A perfect beginner bike route!

Feeling more active? Continue South on Route 2 over our brand-new drawbridge into Grand Isle - the only vehicular movable bridge in the State of Vermont.  Turn left onto East Shore North and follow it all the way down winding along the calm east shore of Grand Isle with the Lake on your left. Visit Pomykala farm for a fresh snack and then take a breather at a local favorite spot, Mary Crest Beach, before heading across Route 2 towards Hyde Road. A brief left onto Adams School Road brings you to Quaker Road where you’ll ride to the West Shore and follow the Lake to Mocassin Avenue.  Head north when you reach Route 2 and follow all the way back to the North Hero House for just over 20 miles of cycling serenity.

There is so much to see on or off the bike. Interested in Visiting the old Fort in New York? How about the Noyan Fromagerie? Have you seen fossils at the oldest diverse fossil reef in the world? Want to see the beautiful St Anne’s Shrine? We know you’ll leave North Hero Island breathless after a bicycling trip starting at the North Hero House. You can even cycle to Burlington in the Summer months using the Local Motion Bike Ferry and crossing the Causeway into Colchester with water completely surrounding you!
